Online newsletter delivers what members want and need
A well-planned mix of content gets valuable information into the hands of user group members, while the publication also taps those same members for content contributions.
The “VMUG Voice”—the newsletter for the 90,000 members of the VMware
User Group—gets it all right. As a newsletter, it’s not the place for longer features; instead, it is loaded with updates, news, reminders, and offers of real interest to readers. At the same time, the newsletter features member-bloggers as a discovery resource for readers, part of a rich sidebar that also invites readers to find their local group, learn about new training courses, and see new publications.
The articles are short—as newsletter articles should be. Most important, though, is the mix of content, which adheres to a list of themes including case studies, tech tips, product and service updates, success stories, and best practices. By ensuring articles fit these categories, the group has been able to achieve a significant increase in open and click-through rates.
We want to make sure the “VMUG Voice” staff members get the credit they deserve—particularly for a volunteer effort—so to that end, we award them the prize for Best Newsletter in PR Daily’s 2014 Nonprofit PR Awards. Congratulations.
