Anyone who’s watched Morgan Spurlock’s haunting 2004 documentary “Super Size Me
” on the fast food industry likely remembers the exposé’s infamous “Smoking Fry
” scene, when an order of McDonald’s golden french fries was agelessly preserved in a jar for 10 weeks.
Oddly, the experiment left me hankering for the nearest drive-thru.
That wasn’t the case, however, when I read in the Daily Mail
of David Whipple, a Utah man who in a segment
on “The Doctors” revealed photos of a McDonald’s hamburger he bought in 1999. The burger, which was mistakenly left in a coat pocket for the first two of the past 14 years, is void of any visible mold or rot. The only sign of age is a disintegrated pickle, reports Business Insider
Incidentally, the chain had previously explained
"In the example of a McDonald’s hamburger, the patty loses water in the form of steam during the cooking process. The bun, of course, is made out of bread. Toasting it reduces the amount of moisture. This means that after preparation, the hamburger is fairly dry. When left out open in the room, there is further water loss as the humidity within most buildings is around 40 percent. So in the absence of moisture or high humidity, the hamburger simply dries out, rather than rot."
