74 percent of Americans don’t know what ‘check in’ means

By Jackson Wightman | Posted: June 8, 2012
From your vantage point, it might seem like everyone uses social media.

If that’s the case, these stats may shock you.

In a post on his blog Convince & Convert, author and consultant Jay Baer suggests social media has yet to reach the "maturity" we claim it has.

Did you know, for example, that only 33 percent of Americans have ever followed a brand on social media?

Were you aware that a mere 3 percent of Americans have ever “checked in” and that 74 percent don't even know what a "check-in" is (well, at least the social media version, we're sure they've done it at a Holiday Inn).

In what may be a good sign for those who've taken a beating via the Facebook IPO, a solid 47% of Americans say Facebook has "greatest influence" of any social network on buying decisions.

Baer compiled these statistics and more. Read his full post here.
