Study: The No. 1 reason you unfriend someone on Facebook

By Kevin Allen | Posted: December 21, 2011
How much do you think about friending or unfriending someone on Facebook?

Is it a thoughtful process for you, or something that’s as easy as the button clink that makes it happen?

If you fall into the thoughtful camp, a recent Nielsen chart outlining the most common reasons we take these actions on Facebook will interest you.

The most common reason people friend others on Facebook, obviously, is because they know one another in real life. It gets a bit trickier when it comes to removing people from your friend list.

Here’s a sampling of the most common reasons we remove friends:

1. Offensive comments
2. Don’t know the person well
3. Trying to sell me something
4. Depressing comments
5. Lack of interaction

Check out the full results of the Nielsen study here.
