It’s taken two months, but the Public Relations Society of America has revealed the final three definitions of “public relations.” One of them will become the definition.
And they are:
Public relations is the management function of researching, communicating and collaborating with publics to build mutually beneficial relationships.
- Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.
- Public relations is the strategic process of engagement between organizations and publics to achieve mutual understanding and realize goals.

Public voting is open from Feb. 13 through Feb. 26.
The effort is part of PRSA’s Public Relations Defined campaign
, an effort it launched in December to determine a modern definition of the term. The PRSA’s Definition of Public Relations Task Force developed the finalists after consulting with its 12 global partner organizations. The task force reviewed roughly 1,000 submissions from the public, along with online comments and blog posts. The effort was twice delayed
so PRSA could continue to seek input on the candidate definitions.
PRSA plans to announce the winner the week of Feb. 27.
