Nielsen: Millennials are now called Generation C

By Kevin Allen | Posted: February 24, 2012
If you are between the ages 18-34, congratulations—marketers now have a new way of classifying you.

You are to be known going forward as Generation C.

The C stands for “connected”—because you crazy kids are always using your smartphones and your new-fangled Facebooks and Twitters. You can thank Nielsen for the designation.

Here’s why:

The latest Census reports that Americans 18-34 make up 23 percent of the U.S. population, yet they represent an outsized portion of consumers watching online video (27 percent), visiting social networking/blog sites (27 percent), owning tablets (33 percent) and using a smartphone (39 percent). Their ownership and use of connected devices makes them incredibly unique consumers, representing both a challenge and opportunity for marketers and content providers alike. Generation C is engaging in new ways and there are more touch points for marketers to reach them.

Way to go, 18-34 year olds. You may be reachable as far as your friends and acquaintances are concerned, but you’re presenting a real challenge to marketers when it comes to reaching you.
