Report names the 20 worst PR disasters in sports

By Kevin Allen | Posted: April 23, 2012
The University of Arkansas and the Miami Marlins are the latest sports entities to suffer major PR disasters, but they’re certainly not alone.

Arkansas fired its football coach, Bobby Petrino, after he revealed an inappropriate relationship with an athletic department employee. The Marlins saw its manager, Ozzie Guillen, make some ill-advised comments praising Fidel Castro, which ticked off Miami’s entire Cuban population.

If either is looking for tips on how to weather the storm, they can check out the Bleacher Report’s “20 Biggest Sports PR Disasters of the Last Decade” and see how their list-mates dealt with their mistakes.

Here’s a rundown of their choices (but apparently they don’t count Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky nightmare a sports PR disaster):

20. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and his foul mouth;
19. Orlando Magic Dwight Howard demands his coach be fired;
18. Boston Red Sox “Chicken and Beer” scandal;
17. Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas spurns the White House;
16. New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski seen dancing after Super Bowl loss;
15. Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas pulls a gun in the locker room;
14. New York Jets locker room rage;
13. NHL concussions;
12. Pittsburgh Steelers’ James Harrison labeled “hitman”;
11. NCAA investigations;
10. Brett Favre’s inappropriate text messages;
9. LeBron’s ill-advised “The Decision”;
8. Plaxico Burress shoots himself in the leg;
7. MLB MVP Ryan Braun battles steroid claim;
6. Terrell Owens … being Terrell Owens;
5. NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s betting/fixed game scandal;
4. Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino’s inappropriate relationship;
3. Ozzie Guillen’s Fidel Castro comments;
2. New England Patriots’ “Spygate” scandal;
1. New Orleans Saints “Bountygate” scandal.
