Charles Pugh should’ve known this would blow up in his face. Maybe he did.
Either way, the media personality turned Detroit city council president was involved in a dustup with Josh Sidorowicz, an intern at the trade publication Automotive News, over a tweet from the young employee. Basically, the intern swiped at Pugh, who responded by firing a virtual machine gun at him.
Sidorowicz, a senior at Michigan State University (according to his Twitter feed), sent
this tweet on Saturday: “Wow, love this little piece. Too bad @Charles_Pugh has been such a disappointment for the city of Detroit so far.” The tweet links to a
Detroit News story about a video Pugh posted to his website that details his weight loss secrets. The city council president has lost 60 pounds.
Laura Berman, the author of the
Detroit News story, questions whether Pugh is devoting too much energy to sharing his weight loss secrets when he should be worried about the city of Detroit. Pugh has said he’s responding to a health crisis in the city.
Due to Pugh’s response to Sidorowicz’s tweet, the council president might be dealing with another crisis of the PR variety. Pugh unleashed a barrage of tweets on the young intern, in which he claimed he was offended. He also told on the young man:
That was followed by a tweet to @AutomotiveNews in which Pugh said he’d “appreciate a word” to its intern.
Finally, the blog
Detroit Politics jumped in on Sidorowicz’s behalf and called Pugh a “bully.” To which Pugh replied: “
lol.”
Now the charge Berman mentioned in her column—that Pugh devotes too much energy elsewhere instead of Detroit—and Sidorowicz highlighted is in full display: Why spend so much time worrying about this tweet (Sidorowicz has a couple of hundred followers) when Detroit needs his full attention?
It seems like
another example of the “
Streisand Effect.”
We called and emailed Pugh’s office to find out why, but haven’t heard back.
