Is naming children after social media terms becoming a trend?

According to a Facebook post from last Saturday night—first spotted by The Daily Dot—a mother named her newborn daughter Hashtag, presumably after the word or statement attached to a tweet.

Here’s the Facebook update verbatim:

“Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last nite. She weys 8pounds and i luv her so much!!!!!!”

She’s a cute kid, but if her name is truly Hashtag, she may have to endure a childhood of ridicule—it’s sort of like a social media-era “A Boy Named Sue.” 



As The Daily Dot noted, Hashtag isn’t the first example of a child named after social media. In February, an Egyptian man named his son Facebook to celebrate that nation’s revolution, which was fueled by platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

So what’s the appropriate nickname for Hashtag?
