Twitter fight erupts between PR chiefs at Google and Microsoft

By Kevin Allen | Posted: December 18, 2012
Even the titans of Webdom aren’t above a good new-fashioned Twitter dustup. And this time it’s between PR execs from Microsoft and Google.

Specifically, Frank X. Shaw of Microsoft launched a one-man attack against Google’s Jill Hazelbaker. It all started with this New York Times story, which details Microsoft’s hiring of Mark Penn as its head of strategic and special projects. Among those special projects is Microsoft’s anti-Google campaign, which includes critical commercials that harken Penn’s background as a campaign ad man (think gruff voice and overall negative tone of said ads).

But here’s the passage that launched a thousand tweets (OK, not that many—but you get the point):

“Jill Hazelbaker, a Google spokeswoman, declined to comment on Microsoft’s actions specifically, but said that while Google also employed lobbyists and marketers, “our focus is on Google and the positive impact our industry has on society, not the competition.”

Business Insider has a collection of Shaw’s anti-Hazelbaker and anti-Google tweets here. Among the tweets:

Hazelbaker, in classic Google fashion, remained above it all—by not issuing a response.
