Americans will spend $1 billion on snacks for the Super Bowl

By Kevin Allen | Posted: February 3, 2013
The biggest event in American sports will take place in New Orleans in a matter of hours.

The Super Bowl—gran fromage of the football world—pits the San Francisco 49ers against the Baltimore Ravens. But it’s not just a culmination of a hard-fought season. It’s also a cash cow and as close to a national holiday that you can get without actually being recognized as one.

An infographic from Turbo Tax takes a look at the numbers, and they’re pretty impressive. For instance:
• Cost for a 30-second commercial in 2012: $3.5 million;
• Total spent on snacks: $1.02 billion;
• Amount spent on beer alone: $49.3 million.
