Looking back on 2011, there were a lot of events and topics worth sharing.

An infographic from AddThis illustrates not only what people shared online this year, but where they shared it.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Facebook was responsible for more than half (52.1 percent) of sharing on the Web this year. Twitter made up 13.5 percent, and email, print and favorites made up 14.4 percent.

Mobile sharing experienced a growth spurt this year, and sharing on the iPad surpassed sharing on the iPhone.

What was everyone sharing? Osama bin Laden's death was the most shared topic this year, followed by the East Coast earthquake, Hurricane Irene, Steve Jobs' death, and the Royal Wedding.

Other interesting facts about this year's social shares:

  • Sharing on Tumblr grew by 1299.5 percent
  • Sharing on Google declined by 8 percent
  • Topics related to death and disaster made up 73 percent of the year's top shares
  • In Japan, 52 percent of sharing occured on Twitter
