Americans drop $4.5 billion for St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just an ideal occasion to drink too much green beer and make questionable decisions. It’s also big business.

The average American shells out $35 every St. Patrick’s Day, a total of $4.5 billion each year. Nearly half of all Americans report celebrating the holiday. A big chunk of that money ($245 million) is dedicated to beer sales alone.

Comparatively, the $1,500 it costs to dye the Chicago River green every year is a pittance.
