Infographic(s): The hottest topics in social media in 2011

By Alan Pearcy | Posted: January 3, 2012
In 2011, social media continued to evolve, but does that mean its users did, too?

If the most pressing topics in the Twitterverse are any indication, we should be a little scared.

According to Twitter, the most important event of the year was Beyonce revealing her pregnancy during the MTV Video Music Awards, which logged a record 8,960 tweets per second.

Comparatively, the raid on Osama Bin Laden received 5,106 tweets per second.

Meanwhile, teen mogul Justin Bieber took the crown as person of the year; his 140 character messages were retweeted 5 million times on average.

At least the hashtag of the year didn’t go to a starlet or anyone from the world of entertainment, but rather #Egypt.

See what else made news online, according to this infographic from Frugal Dad, as well as what missed the mark in 2011, based on this second infographic from Flowtown.
