Incredible video: Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ in dominoes

By Alan Pearcy | Posted: June 26, 2012
Every weekday, PR Daily associate editor Alan Pearcy highlights the day’s most compelling stories and amusing marginalia on the Web in this, #TheDailySpin.

Between dealing with clients and the media, public relations work certainly teaches the value of patience. Still, that’s nothing on the time and tolerance needed to build a massive domino work-of-art while fighting the urge to knock it down. Just ask YouTube video maker FlippyCat, whose second attempt at creating a domino version of Vincent van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night” took roughly 11 hours. (You can also see FlippyCat’s recreation of “Mona Lisa” here.)

Meanwhile, the rest of the art community remains on a manhunt for Uriel Landeros, a 22-year-old charged with vandalizing an original Picasso at a Houston museum after a camera phone caught him spray-painting a bull and the word “Conquista” over the artwork.

Ellen DeGeneres didn’t need to deface a thing in her masterpiece online gallery of old yearbook photos. While it’s certainly hard to select a favorite amid the onslaught of bad hair, there’s something to be said for perfect timing.

Speaking of time, it’s been 40 years since Congress passed Title IX, a barrier-shattering law established in 1972 that requires gender equality within educational programs that receives federal funding. To mark the occasion, President Obama penned this reflective op-ed published by Newsweek on the edict’s impact on society.

Obama also took time to encourage his supporters to donate their wedding gifts to his reelection efforts. In a sign that the president is perhaps out of touch—or desperately in need of more campaign cash—the “Obama Event Registry” tries to convince couples planning their nuptials to ask that their guests make a contribution to his 2012 campaign in lieu of gifts.

The Huffington Post found an unlikely gift in Aaron Sorkin’s hotly contested new series “The Newsroom.” Between critics panning the HBO program as a snoozefest and members of the press blasting the show on Twitter, it seems everyone in the media is determined to point out where the show is getting it right and getting it wrong. That withstanding, it has produced a dangerously fun drinking game.

Of course, a drinking game alone won’t land “The Newsroom” a second season. However, with the launch of a new site, Google is seeing to it that the more than 3,000 endangered languages live on.

Sadly, the same can’t be said of Lonesome George, the last of the Galapagos giant tortoise species, who was found dead on Sunday. It is believed George was roughly 100 years old. Rest in peace, my friend.

Breathing life into an old friend, Little Caesar’s is reviving its iconic character and “Pizza! Pizza!” tagline, marking the chain’s first national campaign in 15 years.

Wonder if a fire hydrant is included in Little Caesar’s media mix? KFC did it Brazil. In fact, as The New York Times reports, a number of cities are willing to offer ad placements to any brand that’s willing to hand over some much needed cash for public funds.

Just don’t do any handholding while in Tennessee. The state recently enacted a pro-abstinence sex education law that bars teachers from promoting “gateway sexual activity.” With supporters of the bill unable to explain further the activities to which they refer, critics of the legislation have labeled it the “no hand-holding bill.”
