They’re cleaning their homes, cars, offices and desks, but what about a social cleaning strategy?

Many PR pros spend the last few weeks of Q4 planning for the new year. Good ideas and honest intentions get set, but once the snow melts, busy PR people realize their ideas and intentions have gathered dust.

Use this time to knock out a 4-step checklist to clear the clutter:

1. Quit being a slacker. Stop trying to do social media without a content calendar.

Set up a monthly content calendar filled with ready-to-go content on company goals, targets, anniversaries, special events, etc. While you’re at it, make a list of approved responses to repeat questions and have a set of posts ready for crises.

2. Deep clean. Have you reviewed your social media goals? Did you even set social media goals?

Review your pages, and clear up the clutter. Eliminate nonsense; remove connections that have dead pages; look for and connect with new pages and brands that inspire you. Update your cover photo and profile photos on social sites.

Personal pro-tip: Use the same avatar on Gmail, LinkedIn and Twitter. That way, when you go from one account to another connecting with reporters or “influencers,” they will easily recognize you.
