‘OMG’ and ‘LOL’ added to dictionary

The latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary will also include the heart symbol, the term ‘muffin top,’ and more.

The OED revised 1,900 words and added a batch of new ones to its latest edition—including LOL, OMG, and FYI—which appeared online on Thursday.

In case you’re unaware, LOL means “laughing out loud”; OMG refers to “on my God”; FYI is “for your information.”

The OED calls these words “initialisms.”

“Initialisms are quicker to type than the full forms, and (in the case of text messages, or Twitter, for example) they help to say more in media where there is a limit to a number of characters one may use in a single message,” Graeme Diamond, a principal editor of OED, explained.
