‘NSFW’ and ‘infographic’ among new words added to Oxford Dictionaries

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: June 4, 2011
If you think Internet slang is a fad that linguists and grammarians will one day eradicate from the Earth, you’re going to be discouraged by the latest news.

Oxford Dictionaries Online added a mess of new words, many of which are abbreviations related to the Web. The list features:

• Newb
• NSFW
• Twittersphere
• Permalink
• Infographic
• Unfollow
• ZOMG

And my personal favorite:

• Nekkid

Yes, that word means what you think it does: naked, which means Oxford Dictionaries Online has added an alternative spelling for the word.

Ack!

That last word, by the way, is not in the Oxford online edition.

WTF?

That abbreviation, plus others like “lol” and “omg,” as well as the heart symbol, are among the entries in the Oxford Dictionaries Online.
