Report says Facebook lost 6 million U.S. users last month

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: June 14, 2011
Since Facebook became a household name, journalists have looked far and wide for the “people quitting Facebook” trend, and the stories they’ve produced have usually seemed a tad thin.

New data suggest these journalists should take another crack at it.

According to data from Inside Facebook Gold, the social network lost nearly 6 million users in the United States, falling to 149.4 million at the beginning of June from 155.2 million at the start of May. Facebook also lost about 1.5 million users in Canada.

A “person close to the company” told Inside Facebook that the site is “still growing in the U.S.”

The number of overall users continues to grow thanks to global gains, Inside Facebook reported. The social network added 11.8 million active users in May, bringing the total to 687.1 million users worldwide.

Facebook also saw a dip in U.S. traffic in May, according to IFG. Take that with a grain of salt, because comScore showed a boost in visitors to Facebook last month.
