Facebook hits back at report claiming 6 million U.S. users quit the site

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: June 15, 2011
Facebook is not taking lightly the report that it lost nearly 6 million U.S. users and about 1.5 million Canadian users in May.

On Tuesday, the social network issued this statement, which was circulated via email:

“From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions. Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn't designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook. We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook. More than 50 percent of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day.”

The social network does not regularly comment on third-party statistics, reports the BBC. The stats in question come from the website Inside Facebook, which uses Inside Facebook Gold to track the social network’s users.

Inside Facebook reported the losses this week, while other sources—including Nielsen and comScore—noted gains in U.S. users, according to the BBC.
