Hollister is apologizing to the people of Korea after models it hired deeply insulted the people of that nation with offensive tweets.
The company said:
“On behalf of our more than 80,000 associates around the world who cherish our core values and our culture of diversity and inclusion, we sincerely apologize for the offense caused by these unauthorized, ill-considered actions.”
The American company opened a store in South Korea last week, and as part of the festivities it flew in U.S. models to take pictures with customers. One male model tweeted a picture of himself making squinty eyes. Other comments and pictures included derisivie comments, including some that made fun of Asian accents.
The result has been
negative media coverage in Korea, as well as calls for a boycott.
In addition to the apology, Hollister has said it fired the people responsible, although that hasn’t stopped the negative social media reaction. One commenter on
Hollister’s Facebook page wrote: “We’ll never forget.”
