How much caffeine do you drink a day? (infographic)

By Alan Pearcy | Posted: October 25, 2011
A celebration is in order my fellow countrymen (and women).

While the average worldwide consumption of caffeine is 76 mg, Americans average 200 mg per day.

And cheers to our friends up north and across the pond—Canadians and Brits rival our love for caffeine. Each nation also averages 200 mg a day.

To put that number in perspective, a 16 oz. (grande) Starbucks coffee has 330 mg of caffeine in it, according to Mayo Clinic.

Too bad the celebration might be cut short. It turns out the health hazards of coffee are as bountiful as our cup is full—or so claims this infographic. Go ahead and brew over that the next time you’re standing in line at Starbucks, preparing to order a grande iced insomnia or a venti bout of coffee-breath.

(For the sake of fairness, WebMD also shares the health benefits of caffeine.)

The headline to an earlier version of this story referred to the number of cups of coffee consumed on a daily basis.
