St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just an ideal occasion to drink too much green beer and make questionable decisions. It’s also big business.
The average American shells out $35 every St. Patrick’s Day, a total of $4.5 billion each year. Nearly half of all Americans report celebrating the holiday. A big chunk of that money ($245 million) is dedicated to beer sales alone.
Comparatively, the $1,500 it costs to dye the Chicago River green every year is a pittance.
