Americans want more vacation time—even though they're not using it

By Kevin Allen | Posted: August 31, 2012
Apparently, all of those pop songs about taking vacations (thank you, Go-Gos, Beach Boys, et. al.) are just lip service. Americans don’t seem to value vacation in practice as much as they do in theory.

More than half of Americans who had 14 vacation days in 2011 had unused time. Most of those left two days of vacation time unused. And yet 52 percent of Americans would forego office-related events for five more vacation days, while 23 percent would swap five percent of their salary. Go figure.

An infographic from Rasmussen College shares these and other vacation-related statistics.

Did you know, for example, that in the U.K. if you have 10 years of service you’re granted 28 days of vacation? Did someone say, “London calling?”
