Clear communication is always important. But when it comes to life or death situations, it’s absolutely essential.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mount Holly, N.J. didn’t mince words when it issued a warning about Hurricane Sandy on Sunday afternoon, urging people to heed evacuation orders. The NWS warning included five “important notes,” the third of which included this strong language:

3. IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT, THINK ABOUT YOUR LOVED ONES, THINK ABOUT THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WHO WILL BE UNABLE TO REACH YOU WHEN YOU MAKE THE PANICKED PHONE CALL TO BE RESCUED, THINK ABOUT THE RESCUE/RECOVERY TEAMS WHO WILL RESCUE YOU IF YOU ARE INJURED OR RECOVER YOUR REMAINS IF YOU DO NOT SURVIVE.
