#TheDailySpin: To benefit charity, ad execs become interns for a day

The National Advertising Benevolent Society (NABS) turned the tables on nine of the industry’s leading executives. Toronto-based agency Zulu Alpha Kilo partnered with the charitable organization to launch its Vintage Intern Auction, putting some of Canada’s best on the bidding block as interns for a day. Speaking of charity, most people in the U.S. recognize “God Bless America,” but we’re guessing few are aware that the song’s writer Irving Berlin—so moved by patriotism while penning it—opted not to collect a dime from the tune. Instead, he set it up so that every penny or royalty ever earned off of the melody went to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in impoverished and disadvantaged areas. Fast-forward 73 years and that’s more than $10 million donated.

Oprah is no stranger to doing good works with her wealth. Just be careful when trying to snap pictures of her doing it. Photojournalist Lionel Lafortune learned that the hard way after he was detained for photographing the Big O while she toured an encampment for Haitians displaced by the 2010 earthquake.

Journalists should also be mindful of the best iPad apps in the world of print, magazines, and newspaper publishing from the past year.

Come next year, the big story is going to be the race to the White House. Will Newt Gingrich be in the GOP driver’s seat? Not if he takes conservative radio host Michael Savage’s offer of $1 million to drop out of the election.

It doesn’t come with $1 million, but the Philadelphia 76ers did just offer one of its Twitter fans a full-time social media coordinating position with the team. Jerry Rizzo, who last week earned season tickets for turning over Twitter accounts that he and another fan created to help the NBA franchise pick a new mascot, received the gig after impressing 76ers CEO Adam Aron with his interests, experience, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Twitter has a place in the NBA and in the Pennsylvania courtroom where former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s preliminary hearing took place Tuesday. Judge John M. Cleland is allowing journalists to tweet, email, and text from inside the courtroom.

But does that mean all journalists should have Twitter handles? It depends, but this infographic from Flowtown can help determine whether or not to join.

Technology is casting its influence on another industry—that of media databases. Cision is now granting mobile access to its media database available through Google Chrome, Apple’s popular iOS operating system, and Android devices.

LIN TV is also using iPads to push citizen journalism further via its newly enhanced app “Report It.”

And with everyone speaking text nowadays, digital technology has saved a few endangered languages from extinction.

You expect to hear foreign languages at the airport, not see Santa Claus—and yet the the magic of St. Nick has appeared at 21 airports throughout the U.S., thanks to Microsoft and Southwest airlines. As part of their “A Picture Perfect Holiday” campaign, free photo kiosks have been setup for travelers can take a free, professional photo with Kris Kringle himself.

It appears the flight attendants at American Airlines have less holiday cheer to spread as the fallout from Alec Baldwin’s booting last week continues. The latest is that American Airlines Flight Attendants Union have asked airline officials to remove “30 Rock” as an-flight viewing option. No decision has been made yet.
