The top auto brands in 2013: report

Consumer Reports released its brand report card for automakers, and Lexus came out on top. American brands, on the other hand, didn’t fare quite as well.

Lexus earned the highest overall score with a 79, followed by Subaru and Mazda at 76. Consumer Reports recommends buying 100 percent of Lexus’ fleet.

Here’s how Consumer Reports says it determines its report card:
“We calculate each brand’s overall score using an equally weighted composite of our road-test and reliability scores for each of its models that we’ve tested and for which our subscribers provided reliability data in our Annual Auto Survey. To be included, each brand needs at least three models for which we have test and reliability data. That’s why we didn’t include Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Ram, or Smart: Each had too few models for which we had adequate reliability data.
The top seven brands are Japanese, with American brands Cadillac (63), Chevy (58), GMC (58), Chrysler (52), Ford (51) and Dodge (46) all lagging.
