You often see companies recalling food and toys from the shelves, but have you ever heard of a yoga pants recall?
That’s exactly what’s happening at Lululemon, where the trendy clothier is pulling a batch of its luon black yoga pants because they’re too sheer.
“We want you to Down Dog and Crow with confidence and we felt these pants didn't measure up,” the company said in a blog post on Monday. “We keenly listen to your feedback and it is paramount to us that you know we're listening. We are 100 percent committed to doing the right thing for our guests and living our standards. It is with these intentions in mind that we've pulled the affected product from our floors and website.”
The move affects 17 percent of the store’s ladies pants and will result in a shortage of black yoga pants, according to
The Wall Street Journal.
Lululemon’s stock price dropped 5 percent before trading began on Tuesday, but has gained some of its lost ground since the opening bell. As a result of the shortage, the company cut its earnings forecast for the first quarter, reports the
Associated Press. The downward revision suggests Lululemon could lose up to $20 million because of the sheerness issue.
News of the shortage seemed to delight many social media users, a sentiment that was fueled, in part, by a
Gawker post on Monday evening. The headline: “
America Descends Into Lawless Pandemonium as Lululemon Threatens ‘Shortage’ of Black Yoga Pants.”
Gawker’s Caity Weaver writes:
“In advance of the coming shortage, every administrator of black yoga pants should institute rationing immediately. No more wearing your black yoga pants to perform yoga, obviously; that would cause too much wear and tear. No more wearing them around the house or on ‘seriously necessary’ Starbucks runs either. Reserve your black yoga pants for only the most formal of occasions: coronations, dignitaries' funerals, etc.”
Tweets about the recall poured in Tuesday morning, many of which made light of the situation. For instance, Lauren Goode, a writer at
All Things Digital, tweeted:
Lululemon Athletica, which is based in Vancouver, said customers who bought the too sheer pants can return them for a full refund or exchange.
