Facebook announces shopping feature

The social network aims to offer marketers an easy way to reach consumers, and its users another reason to spend more time on its platform.

The problem is, if Facebook users want to buy something online, they have to leave Facebook—but not anymore.

The social media giant is working on a new product that will allow retailers to sell their wares directly on Facebook—and the best part is that it won’t cost the retailer a dime.

The feature is currently being tested, Facebook explained in a blog post:

In the coming weeks we’ll begin testing a single place for people to more easily discover, share and purchase products. We’re testing with a limited set of small businesses in the [U.S.] who are also testing the Shop section on Pages. Their products will be eligible to appear there. Over time we’ll explore incorporating additional content into this experience, such as items listed for sale in Facebook Groups.

Facebook seems to be operating with the mindset that it can create a better, more seamless user experience if it just keeps you on its platform. Rather than heading to Target’s clunky website, wouldn’t it just be more pleasurable to stay on Facebook and buy there?
