As vice president of Target communications, Dustee Tucker Jenkins
is always on the move. With iPhone in hand, she travels across the country to make sure the wheels of Target’s public relations and communications teams are running smoothly. In any given week, she seems to be in two places at once—from meetings and volunteer events to Target stores for some retail therapy.
Here, she chronicles three days of a whirlwind visit to New York:
7 a.m. — Wheels up.
I have a pinch-myself exciting job—one that also requires me to spend a lot of time on the road (and in the air), which makes for very long days (in heels, no less). Going straight to lunch with a dear friend when I arrive in New York is the perfect way to kick off my busy week.
12 p.m. — Lunch at Lambs Club.
Having lunch with Michael Carl—Vanity Fair
’s fashion market director—is always a highlight of my trips to New York. Hitting the Lambs Club, a meeting hub for media and PR pros, is a great way to start my trip. Michael and I catch up on the latest trends, his Carl’s Crush
blog (and outrageous Twitter feed
), and the Target fashion event he’ll attend later tonight.
4 p.m. — Target fall fashion preview at the Hudson Hotel.
Part of my job leading Target’s PR team is to understand what’s resonating with editors—to learn how they feel about new collections and hear about their upcoming editorial calendars and plans. A fashion preview is a great way to give fashion editors a comprehensive look at our exclusive collections.
Plus, I get to catch up with the likes of Seventeen
magazine editor in chief Ann Shoket, Vogue
’s Meredith Melling Burke, and Paper Magazine
’s Drew Elliot and Mickey Boardman. As for the looks, I have my eye on the Merona and Mossimo Black collections for fall.
7 p.m. — Dinner with Sonia Kashuk at Craft.
What better way to end an evening than with dinner with long-time Target partner and beauty pioneers Sonia Kashuk and her husband, Daniel? Between the two of them, I leave dinner with a newfound appreciation of the beauty business. I get to know the two of them better, and call my husband to tell him it felt like I just had dinner with old friends.
9 a.m. — Sonia Kashuk fall and holiday collections editor event at Sonia’s studio.
Sonia’s studio is chock-full of inspiration—from the pink color palette to the gorgeous shots of celebs she’s worked with adorning the walls—so it was a great backdrop for the debut of her upcoming fall limited edition collection. (Little-known fact: Sonia and her family were displaced by 9/11, and it took more than three years to rebuild their home and Sonia’s studio.)
Beauty editors from O
, The Oprah Magazine
and People Style Watch
get to see Sonia’s incredible new packaging, new hair accessories, and patterned bags and totes. I’ve got my eye on a snakeskin beauty bag.
10:30 a.m. — Target home fall preview at Target Studio.
For this sneak peek of Target’s new home brand, Threshold, and the new Nate Berkus Collection at Target
, our teams actually built a mock home. That’s right—our studio is completely transformed to showcase amazing home décor product. Our product design and development team (led by Julie Guggemos) is on hand to answer editors’ questions about inspiration, trends and technical attributes.
Most of the product is still under wraps but I can tell you that, as a native West Texan, there’s a blanket with a carrying case that will have football fans rushing to their local Target as they prep for another bleacher season. And Nate’s attention to texture and detail in his collection is so inspiring—I can’t wait to fill my new Minneapolis home with his designs.
1 p.m. — Agency meeting with KCD.
Our fashion PR team sits down with the fashion geniuses at KCD, led by co-president Ed Filipowski, for several hours to brainstorm exciting ideas and strategies. While our conversations are top secret, I’ll just say that KCD has one heck of a view.
4 p.m. — Retail therapy and Target team dinner at The Plaza Food Hall by Todd English.
After a few hours of wandering the streets and visiting shops, we make our way to The Plaza to recap all of the incredible events of the last two days. We’ve worked up an appetite. The food is fabulous, and there’s just something about The Plaza that makes your heart skip a little.
11 a.m. — Target fall fashion lookbook shoot at Jack Studios.
This iconic studio in Chelsea is our backdrop for the fall collection lookbook
, which we’ll share with fashion reporters and editors in the coming months. From stylist extraordinaire Sam Spector primping the models to the racks of clothes and tables of accessories, it is so exhilarating to be behind the scenes with our design team. So much to be proud of (and add to my fall shopping list).
2 p.m. — Lunch at Dos Caminos before heading to the airport.
You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Tex-Mex out of my diet. Absolutely love ending the trip on a high note—and a big side of fresh guac.
