True or False? Marketers prefer Democrats

By Alan Pearcy | Posted: October 12, 2012
Every weekday, PR Daily associate editor Alan Pearcy highlights the day’s most compelling stories and amusing marginalia on the Web in this, #TheDailySpin.

While the winners and losers of Thursday evening’s vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan were quickly decided thanks to social media, now is the time when media outlets provide fact-checks of the claims made by our country’s current second-in-command and his GOP challenger.

So, I figured we would wind down this week with a little fact-checking of our own. Take out your No. 2 pencils, folks. It’s time for a true-or-false pop-quiz.

And here we go:

1. Marketers are pulling for an Obama victory.

True, according to an informal poll taken Thursday at the Association of National Advertisers annual meeting. Advertising Age reports that the nation’s top marketing executives favor Democrats.

2. If Obama wins, Jet Blue will fly you out of the country.

Potentially true: As part of the carriers Election Protection campaign, the airline is providing 1,006 round-trip flights (2012 flights total) to pre-polled participants whose presidential candidate of choice loses the race in November.

3. Paul Ryan has a secret modeling past.

False, although a slew of cheesy photos from a past Time magazine shoot of the V.P. hopeful posing while working out and lifting weights has gone viral. The previously unreleased pictures were taken as part of the publication’s consideration of Ryan as its potential person of the year.

4. “Today” host Kathie Lee hates puppies.

This one is false, although she did accidentally drop one while taping a segment for the morning show’s fourth hour. Watch it here, or simply enjoy the provided GIF below, courtesy of HyperVocal.

5. Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj are this year’s most-popular children’s costume for Halloween.

If only. Alas, this is false. However, at least one parent thought it was a good idea. Check out this gallery of 25 totally inappropriate Halloween costumes for kids put together by parent blog Babble.

6. “The Simpsons” are going live-action next season.

False. There is, however, a real-life version of the show’s famous opening credits that uses actual people.

7. Christopher Walken has joined the cast of “Honey Boo Boo.”

False. But the actor, along with “Seven Psychopaths” costars Sam Rockwell and Colin Farrell, did read dialogue verbatim from the TLC hit show.

8. Chicken is the new burger for fast food chains.

True, reports Time’s Moneyland. The keynote speaker of a food industry conference last week even advised branding the bird a “menu newsmakers.” While price has been one reason for the shift, consumer perception that chicken—whether it’s grilled or fried—is a healthier option than beef has been another big determinant.

9. Jell-O is searching for the world’s fastest pudding eater.

Rousingly, this one is true. As part of a new campaign for the brand developed by ad agency Crispen Porter + Bogusky, the company asked five top competitors from Major League Eating to inhale their chocolate pudding on camera. The company is now challenging consumers to do the same by sending in their own videos.

10. MTV is rebranding all music under its “Jams” label.

False. Yet the company is recasting all hip-hop content and coverage across its channels to be classified under the “MTV Jams” brand name. The move is part of a goal to extend the MTV Jams brand from its current, 24-hour digital channel, to all of MTV’s properties, including MTV, MTV2, and MTV.com. Now if only MTV would actually play music again.
