Facebook group persuades Mattel to make bald Barbie doll

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: April 2, 2012
A social media campaign to persuade Mattel to make a bald Barbie has paid off. The toymaker on Friday said it will manufacture a bald Barbie doll and distribute them to hospitals and to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

From CBS News:

“Mattel company spokesman Alan Hilowitz told HealthPop that the company will produce a friend of Barbie that will have wigs, hats, scarves and other accessories to give children "a traditional fashion play experience." The kids will have the option to remove the wigs and head coverings.”

The move by Mattel is a result of a Facebook page launched in late December by Rebecca Sypin and Jane Bingham, two friends affected by cancer. Bingham lost her hair after treatments, as did Sypin’s 12-year-old daughter.

Commenters on the Beautiful and Bald Barbie Facebook page celebrated Mattel’s decision, but said they’d also like to see the company sell the bald dolls in stores.
