An update with NBC News' apology has been added to the story.
NBC is experiencing another case of the #FAILS.
On Tuesday morning, Twitter lit up with criticism for NBC when the “Today” show aired an interview with Kris Jenner—the mother of Kim, Kloe, and Kourtney Kardashians—instead of the 9/11 moment of silence.
At 8:46 a.m. ET, families of 9/11 victims, as well as members of the New York Police and Fire departments and the Port Authority Police, gathered at Ground Zero. President Obama and the First Lady also took part from the White House.
ABC’s “Good Morning, America” and CBS’s “This Morning” both cut to the event; the “Today” stuck with its Kardashian interview.
TV Newser pointed out that NBC’s New York affiliate did cut away to the observance.
Initially, the NBC and “Today” show Twitter accounts did not chime in; however,
according to the Associated Press:
“NBC said that it aired other segments on 'Today' about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including an interview with a World Trade Center survivor earlier in the show. For its later West Coast feed, the network did show the commemoration of the first moment.”
On Wednesday, NBC News President Steve Capus apologized to affiliates for subjecting them to criticism over the event, according to
The New York Times.
The network and its popular morning show have muddled through a rough summer. For the first time in almost 17 years, the “Today” show fell behind rival “Good Morning, America” in ratings for the 25 to 54 demographic. Its firing of co-host Ann Curry also drew flak from viewers. Later, during the London Olympics, a prominent #NBCFail hashtag emerged on Twitter due to the network’s tape delay.
