Officials vow Baltimore PD changes in light of rights violations
‘Transparency is the only true foundation upon we can rebuild community trust,’ the city’s mayor said after the U.S. Justice Department revealed its law enforcement has a racial bias.
The Justice Department recently issued a particularly damning 163-page report on the city’s police department that detailed racial discrimination, unwarranted arrests and use of excessive force when dealing with suspects. The report found several constitutional rights violations and federal anti-discrimination law violations.
The city and the Justice Department reportedly agreed on a way forward that includes an investment from the city that’s roughly $5-10 million per year.
Baltimore’s mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, said at a press conference Wednesday that the report was “challenging to hear.”
She continued:
But let me be clear: I never sugarcoat our problems nor will I run away from our most pressing challenges. I believe transparency is the only true foundation upon which we can rebuild community trust.
