The 20-cent tip heard ’round the Internet

After the NFL’s LeSean McCoy made ‘a statement’ with a chintzy gratuity, the server’s boss hit back on Facebook. Then it caught fire on Twitter. Brand managers, take note. 

People on social media and mainstream journalists keep talking about an incident involving Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and Philadelphia restaurant PYT this week.

The ongoing online conversation shows that a crummy tip—or a noteworthy level of customer service—now reverberates in our digital world.

Tommy Up, owner of the Philly burger bar, posted a picture of McCoy’s receipt to Facebook with the following message:

The twenty cent tip that the Eagles’ LeSean McCoy just left our server on his $60 check is going to come in really handy for that new official NFL McCoy jersey he had his heart set on. That is a .03% tip. New record!

The photo was shared more than 3,000 times on Facebook, and the conversation has been going strong on Twitter, where Les Bowen (who covers the Eagles for the Philadelphia Daily News) tweeted:

McCoy: tip was “more just a statement.”

Up refused to apologize for his post, writing on Facebook a rebuttal to McCoy’s version of Monday’s events. In it, he said:
