Friday was the first anniversary of Steve Jobs' death, and the folks at Apple, as well as social media users, marked the date with remembrances of the visionary leader.
Apple posted a short video on its website
honoring Jobs, and its CEO Tim Cook shared this message
A message from Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.
One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.
I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for.
Talk of Steve Jobs was among the trending topics on Twitter on Friday, with thousands of people tweeting remembrances and links to stories and videos featuring the late CEO. Many of the stories have noted that Apple continues to thrive even in Jobs's absence. The Wall Street Journal
, for instance, noted the many products Apple has launched since the death of Jobs—most notably (and recently) the iPhone 5—concluding:
“Taken as a whole, the transition seems to have been successful. Since Jobs’ passing, Apple’s shares have risen about 75 percent, from $378.25 on Oct. 5 last year to about $665 today. In the process, Apple has become the most valuable company in the world.”
This week, Interbrand ranked Apple as the second-most-valuable brand in the world
, behind Coca-Cola. Unlike Coke, or any other company on the list, Apple's brand value increased an astonishing 129 percent. Of course, there have been missteps along the way, including the recent headache involving the company's Maps app, which prompted an apology from Tim Cook
Beyond the products he inspired, Jobs is also recognized for his branding genius. He inspired a loyalty that went beyond mere branding
—he created a lifestyle for Apple customers.
At the time of his death, PR Daily
shared 10 inspiring quotes from Jobs. They're worth repeating, so here they are again:
Conformity is boring.
“It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the navy.”

Sweat the small stuff.
“This is what customers pay us for—to sweat all these details so it’s easy and pleasant for them to use our computers. We’re supposed to be really good at this. That doesn’t mean we don’t listen to customers, but it’s hard for them to tell you what they want when they’ve never seen anything remotely like it.”

Sometimes, focus groups aren’t the answer.
“For something this complicated, it’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”

What it means to be a creative person.
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people.

Can you say this about your workplace?
“We’re just enthusiastic about what we do.”

The importance of strong managers and coaches.
"What’s reinvigorating this company is two things: One, there’s a lot of really talented people in this company who listened to the world tell them they were losers for a couple of years, and some of them were on the verge of starting to believe it themselves. But they’re not losers. What they didn’t have was a good set of coaches, a good plan. A good senior management team. But they have that now.”

Take note, small business owners.
“Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it.”

Traditional media remains vital.
“I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers. I think we need editorial oversight now more than ever. Anything we can do to help newspapers find new ways of expression that will help them get paid, I am all for.”

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”
