Communications majors, you got a raw deal.
The return on investment (ROI) for your four-year degree is awfully poor.
At least that’s what a Salary.com report says.
A recent article on the site listed the
worst college majors for earning an ROI on a college degree. Communications made the dubious list.
According to Salary.com:
“You'd think the ink-stained newsrooms and TV studios are full of wealthy and famous journalists.”
For the record, no one has ever associated ink-stained journalists with wealth.
Moving on …
“Not quite. Although these skills require lots of education and training, they buried the lead regarding the lack of payoff. Check these communications jobs out:”
The report lists copywriter, news reporter, and marketing coordinator, along with their median salaries and percentage of return on investment.
All right, so communications is a terrible major if you want to make some money compared with what you paid for college, according to Salary.com’s estimates.
But wait!
On the heels of the “worst ROI” story came another report from Salary.com—written by the same person—about the “
eight college degrees that will earn your money back.” Curiously, English and marketing made this list.
For potential jobs for marketing majors, the report identifies PR manager, product/brand manager, and marketing manager (apparently marketing coordinators won’t rise through the ranks if they have a communications degree).
Meanwhile, potential jobs for English majors are communications manager, speechwriter, and Web content manager.
According to its methodology, Salary.com has the data to prove its findings on ROIs; however, this history major thinks that for people going into the communications or journalism fields, the degree is what
you make of it.
