Bic’s pen for women hit with firestorm of snark

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: August 30, 2012
Although it hit stores last year, Bic’s “Pen for Her” is in the news this week because of a surge in snarky reviews for the product on Amazon.

It’s an odd, though not unprecedented occurrence for a product or brand.

On Amazon’s U.K. site, the pen, which is designed to “fit comfortably in a woman’s hand” and comes in pink and purple (the pen’s barrel, not the ink), has attracted a number of sarcastic (and even erotic) reviews. For instance:

“I'm so pleased that Bic have brought these pens out. When I last tried to write, using a regular Bic ballpoint, all my fingers broke and I had to go to hospital. But with these pens my sweet, delicate, girlish hands need never suffer again.

“If only they could bring out a keyboard. I'm a bit fed up of my fingertips bleeding thanks to this hard, unyielding, masculine keyboard.

"Thank you, Bic."

Similarly snarky reviews have also popped up on the product’s U.S. Amazon page. For example:

“Someone has answered my gentle prayers and FINALLY designed a pen that I can use all month long! I use it when I'm swimming, riding a horse, walking on the beach and doing yoga. It's comfortable, leak-proof, non-slip and it makes me feel so feminine and pretty!”

The surge in reviews drew coverage in the blogosphere—notable the Gawker Media owned blog Jezebel—and in traditional media outlets, including the morning shows.

As Adweek noted on Tuesday, a T-shirt depicting three wolves howling at the moon became a top-seller on Amazon thanks to a sarcastic review.
