West Elm criticized for ‘Made in Brooklyn’ items manufactured in China
The furniture and home furnishings retailer received backlash after news websites reported the items were not actually made in Brooklyn.
You’d be right to look at this T-shirt from furniture retailer West Elm (West Elm sells T-shirts?) through a cynical lens. That’s because it was actually made in China.
The brand is no longer selling any of the “Made in Brooklyn” items, which includes a T-shirt, a beanie cap and a growler. But that’s only following The Brooklyn Paper’s article calling out the brand for its deception. The T-shirt was actually made in China and the other items were made outside the borough.
West Elm couldn’t even muster anything resembling contrition. A representative spoke twice to Consumerist —once while the items were still available and once after—and didn’t seem to care that potential customers were put out.
