Infographic: Americans waste 1.7 hours per day at work

You may not think you are, but the amount of time you spend chatting up co-workers, making a quick call to your dentist, or "looking something up on the Internet really quick" adds up.

An infographic from Ridiculously Efficient looks at how much time the American worker wastes during the work day—1.7 hours on average. And those hours add up—employers pay $759 billion per year for work that employees don't actually perform.

What do employees do instead?

• Get distracted by the Internet: 44.7 percent
• Socialize: 23.4 percent
• Handle personal business: 6.8 percent
• Space out: 3.9 percent
• Apply for other jobs: 1.3 percent
• Other: 19.9 percent

Here's why employees say they slack off:

• 1 in 3 say it's because they don't have any work to do.
• 1 in 4 say it's because they think they are underpaid.
• 1 in 6 say it's because their co-workers distract them.
