PR lessons from buying a home

Taking on a daunting task—such as moving—involves a lot of planning and can often mean preparing for the worst. Here’s how that translates to PR.

I finally decided to move into a bigger house.

After searching, calling and seeing no fewer than seven houses, I finally decided to move. Then, I began to prepare. Finding movers and buying appliances were on my to-do list, and I was dedicated to having a flawless move.

After problems with the painters—and cleaning crew—my day of moving evaporated. The internet connection hadn’t been installed, the washing machine wasn’t delivered on time, and the fridge broke after only two days.

Here’s how my disastrous experience relates to PR:

Planning

Whether it’s landing an interview for your client, launching a website or leading a full-fledged PR campaign, you must be prepared. Even if you’ve completed a particular task a hundred times, you should always dedicate time to prep work.

Stay focused, live in the moment, and be ready for anything.
