Here’s some irony for you.

Democratic press secretaries and communication directors on Capitol Hill were having a discussion via email listserv about the nature of off-the-record emails with reporters—and the email chain was forwarded to Politico reporter Dylan Byers.

Byers shared the content of the emails (minus the names) on his blog.

The crux of the discussion is whether a disclaimer at the bottom of the email—for example, “The information contained in this email is provided for background purposes only and is not for attribution or direct quotation unless specifically indicated”—is somehow binding.
