Report: Most ‘useless’ college degree is … journalism

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: April 29, 2011
PR professional ranked as the second-most stressful job, according to a recent study. But based on a more recent report from The Daily Beast, it seems journalists should be the ones stressing out.

The Daily Beast ranked the 20 “most useless” college degrees, according to job opportunities and pay. It weighed the following data, which it pulled from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Payscale, com:

• Starting and mid-career salary levels, using the profession most associated with the degree.
• The expected change in the total number of jobs from 2008 to 2018.
• The expected percentage change in available jobs from 2008 to 2018.

The winner of this dubious title is journalism. Advertising ranked fourth. Literature was No. 15, and English 19. Public relations was absent from the list—probably not a surprise since employment for PR pros is expected to increase by 24 percent from 2008 to 2018.

Then again, many people with journalism degrees migrate to PR.
