As most of us return to the office after a long holiday weekend (or weeks of holiday vacation), it can be a little depressing to think about getting back to the grind. You might find the hardest part of your day is to stay motivated while your head is still stuck in the “yearning for more vacation” mode.
Don’t worry too much, if you get stuck, just remember a few things:
You should really eat breakfast.
We’re all guilty of skipping it from time to time. Whether you wanted to sleep in until the very last second or just happened to be running late, don’t ditch your morning energy boost completely. Coffee doesn’t count. Get a little protein in your system. You’ll feel better all day.
Everyone else feels just like you today.
Misery loves company, right? Just know you’re not alone in feeling a bit overwhelmed when you’re trying to dig out from under your inbox. Chances are, everyone else you’re working with is doing the same thing. If there was ever a time your colleagues or clients might cut you a little slack on response times, it’s today. Just breathe.
Everything will seem urgent.
We’re creatures of habit and get used to tackling to-do lists, managing deadlines, and trying to balance everyone’s priorities. If you work in PR, you’ve probably been checking your email anyway, so you have the sense that things are stacking up and you’ve got to get through them right away before even more goes on the pile. Relax. Everything will seem urgent, so pick your battles wisely. Don’t burn yourself on your first day back. You still have the rest of the week to worry about.
You still get a short week.
Sure, you’re getting a late start on tackling the week’s projects, but don’t forget, that also means Friday comes around again sooner. Think big picture. Even though you’re slammed now, another weekend is right around the corner.
You can always take a little break.
Make time for a short walk, a couple minutes outside, a quick coffee run, or something else that will get your mind off work for a few minutes. Sometimes the best way to keep from feeling overwhelmed is to switch gears for a while and get your blood flowing. If nothing else, get up to go grab a glass of water and stay hydrated—it’s the best way to keep from feeling tired too early in the afternoon.
You’ll feel better if you put in a solid day’s work.
Resist the urge to obsessively scan the social media circles for anything you may have missed. Just like any other day, there will be a hundred new blog posts and plenty of photos posted from the weekend to scan through. Try to save it for later. If you come back from vacation hitting the ground running, you’ll feel better about tackling the rest of the week after a solid first day. Your digital world will still be waiting for you when you get caught up.
Of course, every job is different, everyone has different deadlines, and everyone has a different amount of flexibility in their schedule. With any luck, you relaxed enough on your break to feel rejuvenated.
If not, remember how you feel and do a better job of actually taking vacation next time.
