5 reasons your client relationship isn’t working

Before a client gives you the boot, pay close attention to these red flags and fight to rebuild your partnership—and reputation.

During my years in public relations, I’ve partnered with clients of all sizes and dynamics—and have been a client myself.

Every client relationship should be a strong, trust-based partnership that promotes your strategic counsel and expertise.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen PR agency/client relationships dissolve when they could have been saved.

Here are five reasons why client relationships fizzle and how to fix things before it’s too late:

1. You use the old bait-and-switch tactic.

A client will often ask several PR agencies to pitch for their business.

To seal the deal, a few of those agencies will bring in their senior execs or “closers.” The client is usually impressed with the caliber of the proposed PR team and gives them the account.

Shortly thereafter, the senior executives are nowhere to be seen, and the client is left with an overwhelmed team of junior staff. Unsurprisingly, the client gets frustrated by the lack of strategic counsel and transparency and terminates the relationship.
