Former U.S. presidents aren’t Twitter fanatics. Jimmy Carter doesn’t have an official account, neither do George H.W. and George W. Bush (though the
media thought Bush 43 had one). Bill Clinton’s
foundation tweets, but the 42nd president doesn’t.
President Obama, on the other hand, started tweeting in 2007, when he was candidate Obama. After his inauguration, the president
stopped tweeting for a while, but shortly thereafter the
White House launched a Twitter feed. The president is tweeting again—and sometimes the tweets actually come from him. (Curiously, neither the president nor the White House has tweeted a President’s Day greeting.)
The victorious candidate in 2012 will almost certainly have a Twitter account, since all of the republican candidates (
Romney,
Santorum,
Gingrich, and
Paul) tweet.
Of course, the question on
everyone’s mind this President’s Day is what messages former Commanders in Chief who lived and governed long before Twitter would tweet. (OK, fine, perhaps it’s not on everyone’s mind, but still.)
If you’re among the people asking that question, PR professional Ken Mueller compiled probable tweets from all 44 presidents. Here are tweets from 10 of them. To see the full list,

@GWashington: #Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
@JTyler: Popularity, I have always thought, may aptly be compared to a coquette—the more you woo her, the more apt is she to elude your embrace. ;)
@JamesBuchanan: Hey, @HonestAbe If you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to #Wheatland, you are a happy man indeed.
@HonestAbe: I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends. #Marketing #Community #Wisdom
@RutherfordB: Must swear off from swearing. Bad habit. #SeeWhatIDidThere?
@TeddyBear: #Tweet softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.
@BigWillieTaft: The trouble with me is that I like to talk too much. Please RT! #Engage
