1 in 5 Americans doesn’t use the Internet

By Alan Pearcy | Posted: April 18, 2012
Don’t take this the wrong way, but if you’re reading this article, you’re not as innocent as you might claim to be—on the Internet, that is. According to a recent study, one in five people in the U.S. doesn’t consider themselves savvy enough to surf the Web, which makes them “Internet innocents.”

The rest of us might feel comfortable browsing online, but that doesn’t mean we know which social network we should use or even when to use them. Good thing this infographic from Zintro answers those very questions.

Speaking of social networks, location-based service Foursquare just reached its 20 millionth user, hitting 2 billion check-ins and more than doubling in size since last June.

And what’s mention of digital media without talk of Facebook’s recently acquired Instagram. Turns out, there’s a slight issue with the photo sharing service that may have eluded Facebook, and it deals with Instagram’s unfortunately popular use for glorifying anorexia.

Body image is always a sensitive topic, especially when it comes to so many airbrushed and digitally enhanced models in the media. That’s probably why a photo shared on Reddit called “The power of makeup” has sparked such a widespread discussion.

Meanwhile, One Million Moms is forcing discussion of an image depicting two young women kissing in the April catalogue for Urban Outfitters. The group, which also protested JC Penney for naming prominent lesbian Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman, has said it finds Urban Outfitters’ image “offensive and inappropriate for a teen,” and, no surprise, has called on parents to boycott the store.

I think parents will be more concerned about campaign ads potentially coming to PBS. Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? Yes, but first, a word from Mitt Romney.

Two girls kissing and politicians campaigning to our kids both take a backseat to a much greater concern facing society: Our Twinkie supply is in danger if Hostess can’t reach an agreement with angered union organizers.

Kanye West angered the makers of Theraflu and PETA, though he’s managed to appease the former, a brand that was the name of his recent single. Instead, he’s retitled the track “Way Too Cold.” The rapper insists, however, that the change had nothing to do with pressures from the cold medicine brand. Good to know since Theraflu is supposed to relive pressure.

Meanwhile, Mr. West’s current main squeeze and queen of self-branding, Kim Kardashian, is reportedly considering a mayoral run. Sorry, citizens of Glendale, Calif. At least you’ll probably be rid of her after 72 days.

No offense, Kim, but we’d rather elect this 6-year-old. When Randy Cox was diagnosed with cancer three months ago, his son, Drew, took it upon himself to set up a lemonade stand to raise money for his dad’s medical expenses. At 25 cents a glass, the kid raised $10,000. Are Drew and that Caine's Arcade kid too young to run for president? Something tells me they could help pull our economy out of the gutter.
