The Supreme Court began two days of hearings on same-sex marriage
Tuesday. Justices will hear arguments about California's proposition 8,
which bans gay marriage in the state, and the federal Defense of Marriage
Act that prohibits spouses in legal, same-sex marriages from receiving
certain financial rights.
To show support for gay marriage, thousands of people on Facebook and
Twitter have replaced their profile pictures with equal signs. It's part
of a social media push from the Human Rights Campaign
. Several phrases and
hashtags related to the hearings also emerged as trending topics on
Twitter on Tuesday.
