LinkedIn hits 200 million users

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: January 10, 2013
LinkedIn announced on Wednesday that its membership has surpassed 200 million users.

That means if LinkedIn were a country, it would be the fifth-most-populated nation in the world, according to an infographic released by the company (see below).

Calling it an important milestone for the company, LinkedIn exec Deep Nishar said in a blog post the social network has users in more than 200 countries and territories and serves them in 19 languages.

The lion's share of members (74 million) are in the U.S.; 18 million members reside in India, 11 million in Brazil and the U.K., respectively, and seven million in Canada.

Turkey, Colombia, and Indonesia are the fastest growing nations on LinkedIn.

There appears to be no end in sight for the social network’s growth; roughly two members per second join LinkedIn.

According to Nielsen’s State of Social Media report, which was released last summer, LinkedIn is the fifth-most-popular social network in the U.S., behind Facebook, Blogger, Twitter, and Wordpress. (The ranking accounts for unique visitors from computers, not mobile devices.)

An Adweek story on Wednesday suggested 2013 could be the year in which big brands flock to LinkedIn thanks in large part to the platform for brands it rolled out late last year.
