4 sentence-crafting tips to power your pitches

It might not be the only thing, but it does matter.

Studying writing and classic literature in college equipped me with many of the skills I use daily. My mom will probably stay that I’ll publish a children’s book one day, though that’s not in my five-year plan. Whether I’m crafting pitches, press releases or poetry, I thrive on stringing words together to uncover the best way to communicate.

If you can’t write captivating content about your client, what would make a journalist want to? It’s not just about grammar—though I can’t adequately convey my love for the AP Stylebook.

It’s been roughly five months since I graduated and was offered my current PR position. Though I don’t yet profess to know everything about media relations, I can offer insights I carried with me from my English courses.

Here are four tips on how to craft sentences for better pitches:

1. Create emphasis with white space.

Call upon punctuation, incomplete sentences and white space to add weight to your writing. Don’t be afraid to use dashes instead of periods or semi-colons.
